It’s important to know these rules before you get to the gym in order to make it a more productive environment for everyone. The New Year (gympocalypse) is unique because this is the period of time when most new members join. Regular gym-goers everywhere are all too familiar with the grim look of emotional distress displayed on faces at this moment. Everyone starts somewhere and no one has the right to claim their reason for joining a gym is superior to anyone else’s. There’s no place for a “here come all those dam resolutioners” mentality at the gym. Is someone using this bar or were they just too “busy” to clean up after themselves? It’s confusing and somewhat annoying to approach a bar loaded up with weights. When you’re done using free weights, put them away in their proper place. No one likes to workout around the stinky person, and in a confined gym, that stinky person does a lot of damage to the entire gym. You should also wear deodorant and practice good general hygiene. Always wash your gym clothes before wearing them again. Yes the gym is kind of a disgusting place when you think about it (try not to dwell on it for too long), but this does not give you the right to go to the gym wearing dirty clothes. It makes no sense to do bicep curls (or other isolation exercises) on a squat rack when you can just as easily do them anywhere else. Gyms have a limited amount of squat racks but an almost infinite amount of space to do bicep curls in. There are not too many exceptions to this rule and curling in the squat rack is definitely not one of them! The squat rack is a magnet for non-squat exercisers because it’s placed directly in front of a mirror and has easy access to a bar and plenty of weight. Get wireless headphones, turn your music on, and put your phone in away until you’re done working out. This isn’t only selfish, it also makes your workout much less effective as rest periods increase, intensity decreases, and duration becomes ineffectively long. Don’t use your cell phone while sitting on equipment between sets. It only becomes an issue when your cell phone use prolongs the time you occupy equipment. No one really cares if you use your cell phone at the gym. Instead, use a jump rope or body weight exercises in conjunction with gym equipment to increase intensity without inconveniencing others. Avoid taking more than one machine at a time during heavy traffic. When the gym is crowded, these supersets are impossible to do without inconveniencing a lot of people. Post continues after video.Supersets are a great way to increase intensity. The six types of people you find at the gym. I’ve been showing up to these classes year long and have earned my space. Just like with parking spaces at the shopping centre, I have a preferred locker at the gym and I get very annoyed if I turn up to find it occupied.Īdd to the above, the people STEALING my spot front and centre in all the gym classes. Don’t even get me started on the locker situation. My main bugbear – as awful as it sounds – is that the newbies are ‘in the way’ – they’re booking up all of my classes, they’re fannying around on ‘my’ equipment. It fits better, lasts longer and having been on the receiving end of a ‘downward dog’, I can concede that fashion leggings are far too sheer to make for suitable gymwear. But you know what? I work out so much better in ‘proper’ stuff. Sure, I also started off all blasé like, ‘hey, I don’t need no $80 leggings to work out’. Personally, a large proportion of my monthly spend goes on gym-wear. These newbies turn up in their old t-shirt and faded leggings, and that’s just the men. The problem is, the gym is a pretty territorial place – it is for me anyway. Aside from ‘Veganuary’ (yawn, pass me a burger) and ‘Januhairy’ (not for me, pass me the razor), it’s officially ‘Gymuary’, where we see bulging numbers at the gym as folks come through on their resolutions: eat healthier, and exercise more. We’ve got past the most depressing day of the year and are midway through the month.
